사실 옥스포드 사전에 한국어 단어가 등재되었다고 해서 엄청나게 자랑스럽게 생각할 이유는 없습니다. 국뽕 유튜버들의 단골 소재이긴 하지만 딱히 이러한 현상이 군사적・경제적・정치적으로 대한민국에게 계량할 수 있는 이득을 주고 있다는 보고가 있는 것도 아닙니다,
그러나 옥스포드 영어사전이 가지는 사료적 가치를 따져보면 그만큼 대한민국이라는 국가브랜드의 인식이 개선되고 이것이 정치적 위상을 강화하고, 국제무역에 유리한 브랜드를 확보하고, 군사적 우위를 유지할 수 있도록 작동한다는 것을 부정하긴 힘들 것입니다.
옥스포드 영어사전에 최초로 한국어 단어가 등재된 것은 1976년입니다. 이때 등재된 단어는 김치(kimchi)와 막걸리(makkoli)였습니다.
이후 45년 동안 총 20개의 단어가 실렸는데 2021년 무려 26개의 단어가 새로 등재되었습니다. 물론 그후로도 지속적으로 새로운 단어가 등재되고 있습니다.
